Hydroseeding FAQ

How should I prepare my yard for hydroseeding?

Prepare the area similar to how you would prepare for installing sod. Ideally the site should have approximately 10–15 cm of good quality topsoil (loam).

  • Level the area
  • Remove rocks and debris
  • Rake the soil smooth
  • Lightly compact the soil surface

If weeds are present they should be removed mechanically or chemically. If herbicides are used, please inform Pioneer Landscaping which product was used and when it was applied.

Do you provide estimates?

Yes. We provide free estimates for hydroseeding projects.

When is the best time of year to hydroseed?

The ideal time for hydroseeding depends on weather conditions, but generally the best months are:

  • May
  • June
  • July
  • September
  • October

Hydroseeding during extremely hot weather requires careful watering. Fall hydroseeding can also be very successful, with germination occurring the following spring.

How long does hydroseed take to grow?

Under good conditions, grass typically begins germinating within 4–7 days.

However, different grass varieties germinate at different speeds:

  • Ryegrass: 4–7 days
  • Fescues: 7–14 days
  • Kentucky Bluegrass: up to 21 days

The first mowing usually occurs within about 3–4 weeks, but it can take up to 20–22 weeks for a lawn to fully mature.

My lawn was green when it was applied but now it looks yellow. Is that normal?

Yes. The mulch used in hydroseeding contains a green dye which helps the applicator see where the slurry has been sprayed. Sunlight quickly breaks down the dye and the mulch returns to its natural straw-yellow color.

Can I walk on my hydroseeded lawn?

Light foot traffic is acceptable, but try to minimize traffic during the early stages of growth.

  • Avoid heavy foot traffic
  • Keep pets off the lawn when possible
  • Allow the lawn time to establish before regular use

The lawn is germinating but looks patchy. Is something wrong?

No. This is completely normal.

Hydroseeding uses a blend of different grasses which germinate at different times. Early germination may look uneven until all the grass varieties have had time to grow and fill in.

Regular mowing helps encourage the grass plants to spread and thicken.

Why are weeds appearing in my new lawn?

The seed used in hydroseeding is certified and very pure. However, weed seeds already present in the soil can germinate alongside the grass seed once the soil is disturbed.

This is normal and usually temporary.

  • Healthy grass will eventually crowd out most weeds
  • Avoid using herbicides during the first growing season
  • Once the lawn is established, weeds can be treated normally

What kind of grass seed is used?

Hydroseeding blends can include several types of grass depending on the application.

Most residential lawns include a combination of:

  • Ryegrass for fast germination
  • Fescues for durability and drought tolerance
  • Kentucky Bluegrass for density and color

Special blends can also be used for acreages, erosion control, commercial landscapes, or naturalization projects.

Do you guarantee the lawn will grow?

Yes — provided the site is properly prepared and the lawn receives proper watering and care during establishment.

Can you prepare my yard before hydroseeding?

Yes. Pioneer Landscaping can provide full site preparation services including soil placement, grading, and final preparation prior to hydroseeding.
