Caring For Your Hydroseeded Lawn

Proper watering and care during the first few weeks are critical for successful lawn establishment. Hydroseeded lawns germinate quickly, but young grass seedlings are delicate and require consistent moisture and careful treatment while they become established.

What To Expect

The seed used in your hydroseeded lawn contains a blend of grasses with different germination rates and growth characteristics.

  • Perennial Ryegrass germinates first, usually within 4–7 days. It acts as a nurse plant that protects slower-growing grasses.
  • Fescues typically germinate within 7–14 days and provide durability and drought tolerance.
  • Kentucky Bluegrass may take 3–4 weeks to germinate but gives lawns their rich green color and density.

Because the lawn contains several grass varieties, it takes time for the lawn to fill in completely. Early growth may appear patchy, but this is normal and will improve as the lawn matures.

Watering Practices

Watering is the most important factor in establishing your new lawn.

  • Wait approximately 24 hours after hydroseeding before beginning watering.
  • Water lightly and frequently to keep the mulch layer moist.
  • Water 2–3 times per day during hot weather.
  • Water in the morning and early evening when possible.
  • Avoid overwatering — if water begins to pool or run off, stop watering.

During cooler spring and fall conditions, one good watering per day is often sufficient.

Consistency is extremely important. If the seed dries out during germination, it can fail to sprout.

Mowing

Once the grass reaches approximately 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches), it is ready for its first mowing.

  • Your lawn may still appear patchy during the first mowing — this is normal.
  • Regular mowing encourages the grass plants to spread and thicken.
  • Always use sharp mower blades.
  • Never remove more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
  • Do not mow when the lawn is wet.

Avoid collecting the clippings during early mowings. Allow them to break down naturally and return nutrients to the soil.

By the 4th to 6th mowing, the lawn should be filling in well and looking much thicker.

Fertilizing

Starter fertilizer is applied during the hydroseeding process and typically feeds the new lawn for approximately the first 4 weeks.

After that time, additional fertilizer may be applied to encourage continued growth.

  • Apply fertilizer approximately 4–6 weeks after seeding.
  • Use a slow-release or organic-based fertilizer when possible.
  • Follow the manufacturer's recommended application rates.

Local garden centers or seed suppliers can recommend fertilizers appropriate for the season and soil conditions.

Weeds

The grass seed used in hydroseeding is certified and extremely pure. However, weed seeds already present in the soil may germinate alongside the new lawn.

This is completely normal and usually temporary.

  • As the lawn matures, healthy grass will naturally crowd out most weeds.
  • Avoid using herbicides during the first full growing season.
  • Once the lawn is established, weeds can be managed using normal lawn care practices.

Remember

Your lawn may appear established within a few weeks, but it typically takes about 20 weeks for a new lawn to fully mature and withstand environmental stresses.

Proper watering, mowing, and fertilization during this period will help ensure a dense, healthy lawn.

  • Keep mower blades sharp
  • Maintain consistent watering during dry periods
  • Gradually raise mowing height during hot summer months
  • Fertilize periodically throughout the growing season

With proper care, your hydroseeded lawn will continue to thicken and improve throughout the growing season.
